I’m back with another Harry Potter review, this time for book three – The Prisoner of Azkaban! Out of the first three installments, this one is definitely my favorite. The deeper dive into Harry’s past, new magical elements like time travel, and the introduction of the mysterious Sirius Black had me hooked.
In this book, Harry starts his third year at Hogwarts while a dangerous prisoner named Sirius Black escapes from the wizard prison Azkaban. Is Black coming for Harry? As Harry tries to solve this mystery, he learns more about his parents’ death and the connection between Black, his dad, and their group of friends.
One of my favorite parts is finding out more about Harry’s parents and their lives through Sirius Black and Professor Lupin’s stories. It makes Harry feel closer than ever to the parents he never got to meet.
Spoiler Alert. Click to read.
We’re also introduced to time travel in this book when Hermione uses a Time-Turner device to take extra classes. The time travel element leads to an epic climax where the trio tries to save the day and Black from the Dementors.
We also learn that one of the characters turns out to be a werewolf! I love supernatural elements like this in the wizarding world.
I have to say though, it still annoys me that Harry has to return to the Dursleys’ house every summer! After learning about his parents and seeing the magical world he belongs in, it’s so frustrating to see him with those wretched muggles.
Overall, the blend of mystery, cool new magical concepts, and insights into Harry’s past make this my favorite so far. It earns 4.5 out of 5 stars from me! I can’t wait to see what adventures year four brings. It’s time to delve back into the wizarding world!
